There is a misconception, in popular culture, that drug addicts and alcoholics must have had poor childhoods or that they were party kids. However, many turned to using alcohol and drugs to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It is a sad fact that too many young adults and teens start self-medicating with illicit drugs or alcohol, to control the symptoms of depression, rather than seeking professional counseling. Street drugs that contain substances like Ketamine may, initially, work to banish symptoms of depression, because this drug gives the user the sensation of floating outside his or her body. In the same way, someone suffering from an anxiety disorder is more likely to use substances such as marijuana and alcohol, which lower inhibitions and remove feelings of self consciousness. In too brief a time, an anxiety sufferer can become so dependent on this artificial of confidence, that he or she can no longer deal with everyday situations while sober.
Treating anxiety and depression with illicit drugs and alcohol, however, only functions to worsen these diseases. Anyone with a drug addiction or who is an alcoholic, needs to enter detox. At such a center, the addict will first go through the process of withdrawal. After the patient has gone through this process, and is physically free of drugs and alcohol, he or she needs to have a mental evaluation. This dual diagnosis of substance addiction and some psychiatric disorder is important for recovery. If someone is using drugs or alcohol to mask the symptoms of depression or anxiety, successful treatment of the mental illness can increase the likelihood that recovery will succeed.
Addicts sometimes desire help, but they avoid getting it due to a fear of cost. There are, however, many affordable rehab facilities for those in need. Calling around to different rehab centers is a good way to find one with affordable rates. In addition, addicts will qualify for Medicaid assistance, or they may find that their health insurance plans cover the cost of rehab.
